Along with Joy Division and the Durutti Column, A Certain Ratio was one of the key bands on Factory Records' early roster in the late 1970s. Initially, the Manchester-based post-punk group shared much in common with Joy Division--its bleak atmospherics, sharp guitar lines, and frontman Simon Topping's deep croon clearly inhabiting similar territory as its better-known Mancunian contemporaries. This well-selected two-disc Soul Jazz compilation draws from that formative era, while also venturing into ACR's early-'80s material, which found the ensemble recruiting additional vocalist Martha Tilson and keyboardist Andy Connell for a fuller, funk-leaning sound (see the restless, bass-heavy "Gum") that occasionally verged on world fusion, as with the highly percussive "Skipscada." While these considerable changes understandably perplexed some listeners, EARLY offers up tracks that bridge ACR's sonic transformation, most notably the angular, alienating "Knife Slits Water," resulting in an excellent overview of the woefully overlooked act's heyday. The enhanced collection also includes the video "Tribeca," which follows the group on its first visit to New York City.
