Hard to Love a Man

稀代のシンガーソングライターJASON MOLINAを中心に、2003年のSONGS: OHIA解体後に産声を上げたオハイオ産オルタナ・カントリー～フォーク・ロックの重要グループMAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.。SONGS: OHIA時代の静謐なフォークからより強固なバンド・アンサンブルへと移行し、アメリカン・ロックの伝統を継承しながら孤独と哀愁を歌い上げた00年代インディ・シーンの至宝です。

2005年発表の初EP作品がリリース20周年を記念してボーナス・トラックを追加してファン待望の初アナログ化。オリジナル・トラックには、シカゴのELECTRICAL AUDIOにてSTEVE ALBINIと録音された表題曲をはじめ、インディアナのECHO PARK STUDIOSでのBLAKE BABIESやJOHN MELLENCAMPを手がけたエンジニアPAUL MAHERNとのセッション音源を収録。さらに今回の20周年記念盤では、未発表デモや別セッション音源など3曲が追加された拡張仕様となっています。

JASON MOLINAの切実な歌声にJENNIE BENFORDのコーラスが寄り添う至高のバラード"HARD TO LOVE A MAN"、緩やかにスリリングなバンド・アンサンブルが炸裂する"BOWERY"、ライヴの定番曲として知られるWARREN ZEVONカヴァー"WEREWOLVES OF LONDON"など、全8曲を収録。MIKE KAPINUSによる哀愁のオルガンとJASON GROTHの泣きのギターが、離別と孤独の感情を鮮烈に際立たせています。

JASON MOLINAという不世出の才能が残した、泥臭くも美しいワーキング・クラス・ロックの真髄に触れることができる歴史的一枚。BOB SEGERやCCR、TOM PETTYにBRUCE SPRINGSTEENといった系譜に正しく連なる名品です。

Jason Molina and Magnolia Electric Co were on a tear in 2005, beginning the year with a live album before issuing What Comes After the Blues and Hard to Love a Man in the space of a few months. Magnolia's music is never as fast as their release schedule, though, and on this EP the combo returns to What Comes After's melancholy and rootsy indie sound. Molina's reedy vocal is streaked with emotion on the title track, and Jennie Benford's harmonies help paint in its slight but powerful melody. In fact all the songs on Hard to Love are slight -- Molina's voice never resonates beyond a slightly lengthened vowel, and the instruments sound like they're at half volume, like Magnolia's afraid they'll wake their elderly neighbors. But it's not volume the band is after. The characters and stories in "Bowery" and "31 Seasons in the Minor Leagues" ring louder than an amplifier, and their cover of Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" injects a little tossed-off fun into Hard to Love a Man.
