At the time of its release, BEST OF BRITISH was Ian "Mac" McLagan's first new album in nearly 20 years. It's a wonderfully rough-and-tumble affair that shows his shared roots with Ronnie Lane in the Faces. McLagan is a fine writer and expressive singer, and the set is full of relentlessly rocking, richly soulful numbers. Exuberant background vocals lend excitement to the songs, many of which sound like old classics. McLagan's keyboards are a prime feature, with his Hammond organ pumping ferociously with the rhythm section, occasionally taking concise but spine-tingling solos. There are guest appearances from Ronnie Wood, Billy Bragg, and Damnations TX. The warm and honest BEST OF BRITISH is at once is loose around the edges and classy.
