Milt Jackson's image is set in stone for many as the vibes master of the Modern Jazz Quartet, playing a classy, cerebral variation on bop. In his solo recordings, though, Milt tended to leave the tuxedo in the closet and offer a less rarified, more swinging bebop sound. While this 1974 CTI release doesn't sport the amped-up jazz funk of the label's contemporaneous releases, it contains just as much energy and emotion. Jackson's vibes work is dazzling but never flashy, as he bounces off Cedar Walton's piano and especially Hubert Laws's flute in compositions that move from insistent swing to poignant contemplation with no disruption of tone or momentum. The title tune that closes out the album features some of Jackson's most lyrical soloing over mid-tempo backing that's at once buoyant and sympathetic.
