Full performer name: George Thorogood & The Deystroyers.
George Thorogood & The Destroyers: George Thorogood (vocals, guitar); Hank Carter (vocals, saxophone, keyboards); Jim Suhler (guitar); Bill Blough (bass); Jeff Simon (drums, percussion).
Producers: Terry Manning, The Delaware Destroyers.
Recorded live at the Fox Theater, St. Louis, Missouri on June 6, 1999.
Highly entertaining studio albums notwithstanding, the sages sayeth that George Thorogood is always best enjoyed in a live context, and on the evidence of this concert set, recorded in St. Louis at the end of the millennium, the sages are absolutely right. Here, the Destroyers (theoretically beefed up with a second guitarist, although you can barely hear him) make their trademark ungodly racket, owing as much as usual to '60s garage rock and punk as it does to Muddy Waters. Thorogood, who sounds, also as usual, like he's having a great time, blowtorches his way through de rigeur covers of Bo Diddley, the Strangeloves, and Hank Williams, as well as a generous number of his own hits ("Haircut," "Bad to the Bone"). There are also several left-field surprises, including obscure but very funny songs by soul great Solomon Burke ("Be Bop Grandma" ) and blues sax player Eddie Shaw ("I Don't Trust Nobody"), as well as an almost slavishly faithful take on Nick Lowe's neo-Tex Mex "Half a Boy, Half a Man"). On balance, probably Thorogood's best live album.
