Amidst a teeming generation of No Depression bands who wear their country influences on one sleeve and their rock & roll tattoos beneath the other, Hillbilly Idol stands out by fitting in, not with their contemporaries, but with their influences from the golden age of honky-tonk. You'll find not a trace of irony or rock attitude here; these boys didn't have their country influences filtered through Uncle Tupelo or even Gram Parsons. Bakersfield is the template here, as the spot-on vocal harmonies and concise guitar and steel picking evoke memories of Wynn Stewart and Buck Owens. A snappy rendition of the Louvin Brothers' "She Didn't Even Know I Was Gone" further shows the band's roots, but in Al Moss and Dave Huddleston the band has two strong songwriters of its own, fully capable of churning out tunes that sound like they belong on a honky tonk jukebox circa 1960. That doesn't mean Hillbilly Idol is anachronistic, just timeless, like great country music.
