Though J.B. Lenoir would not reach his artistic peak until his final albums (his passionate acoustic mid-1960s releases), his blues from the 1950s, collected here on MOJO BOOGIE, are great fun. Lenoir's '50s work falls much more in line with traditional electric Chicago blues, with boogie-based vamps, ringing piano accompaniment, and stinging, fleet-fingered electric leads. Lyrically, too, Lenoir leans toward the traditional blues topics of love trouble and good-time partying (as opposed to the more politically minded issues that dominate his later work).
As a guitarist, Lenoir has a smooth, in-the-pocket feel that is suited to mid-tempo boogies, driving rockers, and slow blues alike. But it is his high-pitched, soulful singing that really strikes a nerve in the way it twists and squeezes notes for dramatic effect (his mournful cry on "How Can I Leave," for example). Except for a few curveballs ("I Sing Um the Way I Feel," a duet between Lenoir and a bongo player which features a spare, clip-clop rhythm), MOJO BOOGIE is classic, straightforward Chicago blues, and the selection here--with numerous alternate takes--is a fine sampler of Lenoir's blues from the period.
