Along with Max Roach and Art Blakey, drummer Kenny Clarke was in on the ground floor when bebop evolved in the 1940s. The sessions that make up COMPLETE SWING MASTER TAKES were recorded for an independent French label and feature the cream of ‘40s bop aces--Sonny Stitt, Cecil Payne, Kenny Dorham, and Bud Powell, whose stature on piano equals that of Charlie Parker on saxophone and Clarke on drums. These tracks feature concise soloing and seemingly effortless swing.
