Their earliest forays touched on folk-rock and even protest songs, as well as straight-ahead garage-rock ("Almost There"). Fronted by two unlikely pop stars, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, the portly duo found continuing fame in the '70s singing as Flo & Eddie (most notably with Frank Zappa). While many of the Turtles' '60s hits were penned by outside writers, this set shows their strengths as writers as well.
