Taxxi was never a major name in the rock world -- its three Fantasy LPs weren't huge sellers, and its subsequent MCA releases received even less attention. Nonetheless, the British trio did enjoy a small cult following, which would love to see all of its Fantasy titles reissued on CD. For those who haven't heard Taxxi's pop/rock, the obvious starting point should be Chequered Past -- a best-of collection that Fantasy assembled in 2001. Spanning 1980-1983, this CD contains some of the highlights of Taxxi's three Fantasy LPs: Day for Night, States of Emergency, and Foreign Tongue. Taxxi could deliver a tough, ballsy rocker when it wanted to; "Best in the West," "You're So Pretty," and "Cocktail Queen (Don't She Love to Rock & Roll)" are infectious examples of that side of the threesome. But most of the time, Taxxi favored a clean, keyboards-minded style of pop/rock -- anyone with a taste for the sleek pop/rock sounds of the early '80s should have an easy time getting into melodic tracks like "Sex and Suburban Suicide," "Runaway," and "Girl (New York City)." In the 21st century, Taxxi's pop/rock sounds fairly dated. But then, dated isn't necessarily a bad thing if you have a high opinion of a particular era. And for those who do hold early-'80s pop/rock in high regard, Chequered Past is a fine introduction to Taxxi's music. ~ Alex Henderson
