DICK'S PICKS VOLUME THIRTEEN is the thirteenth in a series of archival live Dead CDs that were overseen by the late Dick Latvala. It differs from the band's "From The Vault" series in that the "Dick's Picks" releases do not feature entire concerts and are mastered from two- and four-track recordings, rather than eight- and sixteen-track recordings. Latvala was the official keeper of the Dead's tape archives; the Grateful Dead organization describes him as "one of the original Dead tapers." Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Brent Mydland (vocals, keyboards); Phil Lesh (bass); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Recorded live at Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, New York on May 6, 1981. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Taped in 1981 at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum, archivist Dick Latvala documents a fine assortment of tunes on this thirteenth volume of DICK'S PICKS. Keith and Donna Godchaux are still recently departed here, with Brent sitting at a still-warm piano bench. While his gravelly voice adds a certain grit which had been absent since the death of singer/keyboardist Pigpen, his dewdrop piano tone carries on the airy spirit of the Dead's seventies recordings. Prominent among the jewels here is the semi-rare "High Time" on disc two. Jerry Garcia fumbles the changes on this one from time to time, but while his picking seems to drift around a bit, when he finds his way the notes gleam with inspiration. Bob and Jerry deliver a fine exchange on the almost-a capella ending fadeout to "He's Gone." Brent plays a lean, mean organ on Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster," well on par with Jerry's prickly slide-playing. The dire, revelatory "Wharf Rat" yields to a customary closing rockout with "Don't Ease Me In" and The Rascals' "Good Lovin'."
