The second of two CDs reissuing all of trombonist Turk Murphy's performances for Good Time Jazz starts out with the very first session Murphy led: four hot numbers (including "Shake That Thing" and "Kansas City Man Blues") that feature a quintet also including trumpeter Bob Scobey, clarinetist Bob Helm, pianist Burt Bales, and banjoist Harry Mordecai. The other selections generally find Murphy heading a septet with either Scobey or Don Kinch on trumpet. Overall, the music is hard-driving, straightforward Dixieland, played with an eye toward the past but not imitative of past versions. Both CDs are highly recommended to trad jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
