これまでイギリスものを録音していたチェリス・コンソート・オヴ・ヴァイオルズがフランス・バロック音楽のアンソロジーを録音。フランスのヴィオール(ヴィオラ・ダ・ガンバ)音楽と言えばサント・コロンブ、マラン・マレ、フォルクレが活躍した17世紀末から18世紀前半が黄金時代とされていますが、チェリスはその前の時代に着目。16世紀後半から始め、ヴィオール音楽の作者としてはあまり認知されていない作曲家たちの逸品を披露してゆきます。ヴィオール合奏のぬくもりを感じさせる柔らかな響きに時にヴィルトゥオーゾ的なテクニックもまじえて、「シュザンヌはある日」や「若い娘」(モニカの歌)など、初期バロック音楽ファンにはおなじみの流行歌による作品から、時代を下るに従い宮廷舞曲の色合いが濃くなってゆく様も聞き取れて、さながら時間旅行のよう。アルバム冒頭のカルーベルと最後のリュリ、二人のイタリア出身作曲家で全体を挟み、フランス・バロックの約束通り最後をシャコンヌで結んでいるのも素敵です。

This album from the Chelys Consort of Viols with guest musician James Akers on Baroque guitar presents a chronological program of French music for viol ensemble spanning the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. It explores repertoire from the early development of the viola da gamba tradition in France, combining dances, fantasias, chanson arrangements, and chamber works. Issued on the BIS label, the recording follows several well-received releases in which the ensemble focused primarily on English consort repertoire, making this program a notable expansion of its recorded scope. The selection of works illustrates changing approaches to viol ensemble writing across the 17th century. Music associated with composers such as Pierre-Francisque Caroubel, Etienne Moulinie, and Eustache du Caurroy reflects the contrapuntal style typical of earlier consort traditions, while later pieces by Louis Couperin, Henry du Mont, Nicolas Metru, and Marc-Antoine Charpentier show a gradual shift toward dance-influenced instrumental forms. The program concludes with Jean-Baptiste Lullys "Chaconne des Scaramouches," bringing the survey into the more theatrical sound world associated with the French court. The Chelys Consort performs with the balanced ensemble sound expected of an experienced viol group. Their interpretations emphasize clarity of texture and carefully shaped phrasing, allowing the independent instrumental lines to remain distinct while maintaining a cohesive tonal blend. Akers contributes several selections on Baroque guitar drawn from Francois Campions Nouvelles decouvertes sur la guitare, adding a contrasting timbre to the predominantly bowed-string textures. Les ages du monde highlights the expressive possibilities of the viol consort while presenting a varied cross-section of French repertoire for the instrument.
