Aswad has been one of the England's longest-lasting reggae bands: since the mid-'70s, they have been active as a backing group for Jamaican stars visiting the U.K. (Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru) and as hit-makers. They were one of the first reggae groups to mix jazz, soul, and funk in with a roots sound.
ROOTS REVIVAL features Aswad's trademark sound--smooth, rich harmonising; Bob Marley-influenced lead vocals; regal-sounding horns; and punchy and buoyant rhythms--merged with the influences of world music and a bit of pop sensibility. "The Best Times Of Our Lives" features a stirring Middle Eastern/North African sound (and a vocal from Cheb Mami), and the reggae-fied version of The Police's '80s classic "Invisible Sun" features a guest vocal from Sting. Purists may be a bit disappointed, but those who like their reggae bright and upbeat will find a lot to like here.|
