The follow-up to their 2000 LP, the Deuces Up, Double Down EP expands upon Breakestra's old-school funk mastery. While their debut displayed the band's proficiency in performing the classic breaks of the genre, these extraordinarily funky five tracks, along with their discography of underground 45s, lay deep into their stark ability to contribute to the movement. Featuring the Miles Tackett (This Kid Named Miles) original single "Deuces Up, Double Down," a wild, old-school Hot Pie and Candy-sounding deep funk groove, the EP also presents great renditions of the "Humpty Dump" and a "Funky Soul"/"16 Corners" medley. With the corroboration of their Stones Throw brethren, the funk genre is as strong and popular as it has been in decades, and Breakestra is one of its finest pupils. ~ Nic Kincaid
