Joe Pass Trio: Joe Pass (guitar); Jim Hugharton (bass); Frank Severino (drums). Recorded live at Donte's, Los Angeles, California on December 8 and 9, 1974. During a period when he was receiving renown as an unaccompanied solo guitarist, the release of this double LP reminded listeners that Joe Pass could also swing hard in a trio setting. Accompanied by the electric bass of Jim Hughart and drummer Frank Severino, Pass mostly explores standards including a few ("What Have They Done to My Song," "A Time for Love" and "You Are the Sunshine of My Life") that were fairly recent at the time. The performances are as excellent as one would expect. In fact, considering how many albums he did for Pablo (a few dozen), it is remarkable to realize that every one of them are quite rewarding. ~ Scott Yanow
