Personnel: Anthony Braxton (soprano, alto & contrabass saxophones, flute, clarinet); George Lewis (trombone); Dave Holland (bass); Barry Altschul (drums, percussion).
Recorded live at Jazzfestival "Jazz Life," Dortmund, Germany on October 31, 1976. Includes liner notes by Graham Lock.
Whereas most jazz performers value improvisation over all other aspects of music, saxophonist Anthony Braxton is a composer first and foremost. His mathematical style of composition owes more to Stockhausen--who Braxton claims as his greatest influence--or even John Cage than it does to Duke Ellington. There are even those who claim that Braxton's music isn't jazz, but one listen to DORTMUND (QUARTET) 1976 disproves that.
Recorded at the Jazz Life festival in Dortmund, Germany, on Halloween, 1976, Braxton, on alto, soprano and clarinet, explores three variations of his "Composition 40," plus versions of "Composition 23" and "Composition 6," with the sympathetic backing of trombonist George Lewis, bassist Dave Holland and percussionist Barry Altschul. It may not swing as much as jazz purists want, but Braxton's music has the warmth and humor often missing from modern composers.
録音 : ステレオ (Live)
