Listen Listen sets forth the unbeatable combination of the Continental Drifters and the music of Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson. The band recorded six of the seven tracks for German radio in July of 2000 and the seventh track in the studio in August 2001. This 28-minute release on the Blue Rose label may be short, but it's as good as anything the Drifters have released. The timing, a few months after the release of the group's new album, is a bit awkward, because Better Day pales beside this acoustic set. The album kicks off with the title track, sung lovingly by Vickie Peterson, and although it was recorded a year after the other tracks, it blends perfectly. Susan Cowsill's vocal on the jaunty "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight" will motivate even the most conservative listener to hit the local pub for a bit of fun, while Holsapple offers a moving version of "The Poor Ditching Boy." The band's lovely harmony and song choices conjure up images of a late-'60s Fairport Convention in an acoustic format. They're that good. This British folk-rock connection helps clarify the Continental Drifters' roots as well as explain their openness as a unit. Superb versions of "I'm a Dreamer" (sung by Cowsill) and "You're Going to Need Somebody" (by Robert Mache) also make appearances, but the icing on this perfectly layered cake is "Meet on the Ledge." It would be sacrilege to suggest that it is as good as the Fairport original, but it wouldn't be far from the truth. An inspiring effort, Listen Listen captures the spirit of folk-rock and will please both Drifter and Fairport fans. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
