グラムロックの象徴、T.REXが1970～1977年にリリースした全スタジオアルバム8タイトルを収録したCD8枚組ボックスセット『The Studio Albums 1970-1977』。各アルバムには同時期シングルなどのボーナストラックも収録。

1960年代半ばよりTyrannosaurus Rexとしてレコーディングを行ってきたフロントマン、作詞家、詩人、ギタリストのMarc Bolanは、新たなサウンド、新たなバンド、そして短縮された新しい名前「T. Rex」で新時代を迎えた。その過程で、彼は70年代のイギリス初の新たなスーパースターとなり、休むことのないミューズを示し、ジャンルにとらわれない創造性を絶え間なく披露した、息を呑むようなヒットシングルとスタジオアルバムを連続で世に放ちました。

1970年代の『T.REX』は、「Ride A White Swan」のチャートでの成功に続いて登場し、Tyrannosaurus Rexサウンドと、彼をスーパースターの座に導く新たなエレクトリック・グラムの間に音の架け橋となった。続く1971年の不朽の名作『ELECTRIC WARRIOR』は、「ライフズ・ア・ガス」、「ジープスター」、「ゲット・イット・オン」、「コズミック・ダンサー」など、名曲満載のコレクションです。1972年の『SLIDER』はT・レックス熱狂のピークにリリースされ、「テレグラム・サム」と「メタル・グル」という2曲で全英1位を獲得。1973年の『TANX』は最もエキサイティングなロックアルバムの1つとなりました。

1974年の『Zinc Alloy』では、ボランの関心はR&Bの影響を取り入れた熱狂的でエレクトリック・ソウル寄りのグラム・サウンドへと移行し、ファンキーなキーボードやゴスペル調の「Cosmic Choir」が生まれた。1975年の『BOLAN'S ZIP GUN』では、当時の時代精神を捉え、ボランのサウンドを原点回帰的なプロト＝パンク的なアプローチで表現した。1976年のゴージャスな『Futuristic Dragon』は、後期T・レックスの名曲であり、時代を超越したフックと自然なメロディー（ヒットシングル『New York City』を含む）が揃った、成熟した自信に満ちた作品となった。最後に、「I Love To Boogie」や「Light Of Love」といったヒットシングルに加え、ボランの早すぎる死の前最後のスタジオアルバムとなった1977年の『DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD』は、音楽界があまりにも早く失った偉大な才能を今なお思い起こさせる作品。マークの最後のシングル「Celebrate Summer」も収録されています。

One only needs to hear a song or two from T. Rex to understand how important they were to the glam rock movement of the 1970s, and to the very evolution of rock & roll. Blessed with superhuman talent, charisma, charm, and songwriting chops to spare, Marc Bolan injected sex appeal and giddy playfulness into tunes that sunk their hooks in on a level that made them radio hits. 1971s Electric Warrior and its 1972 follow-up The Slider produced some of Bolans best-loved hits and stood as the bands commercial peak, but they continued strong (especially in the U.K.), steadily releasing new music at a clip of about one record a year right up until Bolans untimely death in 1977. The Studio Albums 1970-1977 handily compiles eight T. Rex albums: a self-titled rocker from 1970, the aforementioned Electric Warrior and The Slider, the electrified sounds of 1973s Tanx, 1974s soul-inflected Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow, 1975s rough-edged and distortion-friendly Bolans Zip Gun, the disco flirtations of 1976s Futuristic Dragon, and the 1977 tour de force Dandy in the Underworld. Its a compendium of Bolans songwriting greatness, and a testament to an artist turning out near-flawless work even when creating at such a speedy rate. While The Studio Albums 1970-1977 is a must for anyone enamored with the best-known T. Rex material and hungry for more, it still tells only some of the story. There were four albums of whimsical acid folk released as Tyrannosaurus Rex before the group changed their name and made their approach more rocking in 1970, and apart from these eight proper albums, there were singles, versions of some albums with different names for specific regions, and an archive of demos, outtakes, and the like. Luckily, all eight of the albums included here are presented in deluxe editions, with extra tracks that cover a wider range of the story while still offering a clean, encyclopedic view of the bands body of work. ~ Fred Thomas
