Danny Krivit, a man who bought his first mixer before most DJs of the 1980s and '90s had entered the world, obviously has to rummage pretty far back in his crate to compile an influences-and-inspirations tape. And since his style was learned firsthand at primal dance clubs like the Paradise Garage, Grass Roots has the same sense of genre-busting flair that made Larry Levan one of the best DJs of the '70s and '80s. After a few exploratory jazz tracks (Blackbyrds, Hank Crawford, Gabor Szabo), Krivit ventures forth with an array of soul/funk/disco nuggets; "Evil" by Earth, Wind & Fire gives way to Nina Simone's "My Baby Just Cares for Me" from 1957, while elsewhere Krivit segues from Lamont Dozier to Talking Heads to Marianne Faithful to War with barely a backward glance. Except for a bare few house tracks, everything is pre-1980, often tending to the same laid-back Sunday afternoon vibe of Krivit and Francois K.'s Body & Soul club (itself reminiscent of the Paradise Garage). Nearly half of the tracks are Krivit's own edits, some of which stretch back to the early '70s when he began mastermixing with reel-to-reel arrays. ~ John Bush
