As the title suggests, the Curtis Mayfield edition of the ongoing In Concert DVD series was recorded on April 28, 1990, in Germany (originally aired as part of the Ohne Filter music program), just a few short months before Mayfield was tragically paralyzed due to an on-stage mishap. Although Mayfield is in fine form both vocally and guitar-wise, his backing band fails to recreate the gritty funk that fueled his early-'70s classic work, as the renditions often come off a tad too sterile-sounding (especially evident in the clean keyboard sound -- how about some organ!). Mayfield's songs from the classic Superfly soundtrack turn out to be the highlights of In Concert as well, including the album's show-opening title track, "Freddie's Dead," and "Pusherman," as well as "Gypsy Woman" and "Move on Up." Also featured are such bonus items as a Curtis Mayfield biography, an interview with the show's producer, and a "sound tuning" feature. Although In Concert is a decent document of latter-day Curtis Mayfield in concert, it may make you long for a video from earlier in his career (just listen to the exceptional 1971 album Curtis Live! for the proof of the in-concert magic that Mayfield and the right backing band could create). ~ Greg Prato
