Space, time, and texture are all hedonistically blended on LOST IN THE TRANSLATION, the brainchild of a diverse group of ambient music avatars. Though it might at first glance seem like incongruity would be the operative leitmotif here, in truth, a strange kind of coherence makes this collection work. "Eternal Drift" sounds like a transmission from the Jurassic Age, as dinosaur groans and sonorous bird-like calls lurk behind a foreground of dripping water. In "Peace," leviathan-length bass notes and gusts of wind create a mood more strangely ominous than what the title suggests. "Aum" marries lamasery prayer-song to bubbling noises that seem to have been captured on tape at the side of a pool of molten lava. "Cosmic Trigger" sounds like an undiscovered soundtrack gem, with its swirls of wind-sound and plangent woodwind melody. Perhaps the best example of the polymorphous nature of this album is "Holy Mountain," which in the span of 30 seconds seamlessly evolves from a dark and portentous synth piece to a dance-inducing tabla-led raga.

商品の紹介

Alternative Press (2/95, p.56) - "...Throughout LOST IN THE TRANSLATION courses an organic, spiritual vibe that occurs when you get input from some of the planet's finest musicians and an idea man (Bill Laswell) who's got a far reaching vision. LOST IN THE TRANSLATION is a trip in several different time zones..." Down Beat (9/95, p.48) - 4 Stars - Very Good - "...Using the cavernous echoes and deep bass of `dub' reggae production, Laswell creates an eerie sonic environment in which trance-inducing musics of various cultures, e.g., Indian raga and North African percussion, mingle with other found sounds..." JazzTimes (7-8/95, p.109) - "...to get lost and to transcend translation, to weave together different musics without belaboring specifics....we're led from impression to impression, idiom to idiom, culture to culture, without a clear road map or crisp delineations. And it works, melting ambient fashion into a polymorphous whole..."
