Space, time, and texture are all hedonistically blended on LOST IN THE TRANSLATION, the brainchild of a diverse group of ambient music avatars. Though it might at first glance seem like incongruity would be the operative leitmotif here, in truth, a strange kind of coherence makes this collection work.
"Eternal Drift" sounds like a transmission from the Jurassic Age, as dinosaur groans and sonorous bird-like calls lurk behind a foreground of dripping water. In "Peace," leviathan-length bass notes and gusts of wind create a mood more strangely ominous than what the title suggests. "Aum" marries lamasery prayer-song to bubbling noises that seem to have been captured on tape at the side of a pool of molten lava. "Cosmic Trigger" sounds like an undiscovered soundtrack gem, with its swirls of wind-sound and plangent woodwind melody. Perhaps the best example of the polymorphous nature of this album is "Holy Mountain," which in the span of 30 seconds seamlessly evolves from a dark and portentous synth piece to a dance-inducing tabla-led raga.
