For some reason, this 40-track compendium of Dinah Washington's early recordings is chronologically shuffled to a greater degree than other volumes in the Masters of Jazz Cabu Collection series. There really was a progression from her first recordings -- with Lionel Hampton's sextet in December 1943 in Harry Lim's Keynote studios -- through her Apollo sessions with Lucky Thompson in 1945 to her long-standing association with Mercury Records, represented here with tracks cut between 1946 and 1950. There's a lot to be said for hearing an artist evolve across a chronology that traces the actual patterns of his or her life. With two selections from her debut session tossed into the middle of this compilation, one's sense of chronology might become morbidly disrupted. Maybe that doesn't matter. Maybe what really counts is the potent wonderment of Dinah Washington's voice, and there's plenty of that in here, waiting for you to absorb it for yourself. This material predates her later run-ins with string orchestra accompaniments, and she is heard in the company of master musicians like Cootie Williams, Milt Jackson, Tab Smith, Dave Young, Teddy Stewart, Cecil Payne, Ernie Wilkins and Ray Brown. In the final analysis, then, a bit of chronological disorientation hardly seems to matter. These are some of Dinah Washington's best recordings, and you're invited. ~ arwulf arwulf
