Obscure composer from the Italian avant-garde, Franco Evangelisti was a member of Gruppo Du Impriovvisazione Nuovo Consonanza alongside Mario Bertoncini and Ennio Morricone in the 1960s, an ensemble that defined a groundbreaking improvisation ethic in post-WWII classical music. Continuing to turn contemporary classical music upside down, on his solo double CD on Edition RZ, his experimental works are performed and recorded to a stunningly high standard, making for some of the most intriguing and complex music in the post-John Cage tradition. Prepared instruments and extended instrumental techniques dominate his work, which has similarities to the rigorous abstractions of Maurucio Kagel and Giantano Scelsi. This avant-garde classical music has made an enormous impact on the fringes of free improvisation, and the work of John Zorn, Derek Bailey, and the artists making electro-acoustic improv on the Erstwhile label all have their roots in this work. ~ Sylvie Harrison
