Moving Further Out

Peace Feast is an on-again, off-again label headed by DJ/producer Tim "Love" Lee; it was born out of Lee's frustration at trying to get other labels to release his music, but it eventually took a back seat to his Tummy Touch label. Moving Further Out is a compilation designed to serve as an overview of the 14 titles previously released on Peace Feast since its inception in 1994, and it's a very useful overview at that; some listeners will know immediately that they need to seek out everything that's been released on the label so far, while others will know just as quickly that this compilation is all they'll ever need. The selections vary in quality, of course, but none is less than acceptable. The least compelling moments come as a result of too few ideas stretched out over too much tape; Lee's own "Respect" is a charming tribute to Aretha Franklin that goes on far too long on a single chord, while Bud Bongo's "The Lowdown" compounds the same error by weighing in at a staggering 14 minutes. (Still, the first five minutes of that track are lots of fun.) But these are easily offset by such brilliant contributions as the vaguely dancehall-oriented "Timeless (Global Confusion Mix)" by Shod, Lee's "Super Rappin'," and Mammal's very cool "LS Diet," which combines fascinating sonic textures with frequent digressions into old-school hip hop beats.
