A peculiar release, 1999's EXILE EXTENDED reproduces 1998's EXILE's track lineup (minus the hidden live version of 1978's "Down in the Park") in extended remix form. The remixes, while interesting, don't do much more than extend the songs; there are no radical revisions here. So for all intents and purposes, this is the same album as EXILE, itself one of the most strange and controversial albums of Gary Numan's long career.
The lyrics are vehemently anti-religious, attacking sacred icons and notions with almost blasphemous glee and remarkable anger. Marshaling his most passionate--not to mention guitar-based--performances since 1978's TUBEWAY ARMY, Numan's vitriolic performances are as spiteful as his J.G. Ballard-derived lyrics. Not for the faint of heart, but one of Numan's most interesting albums.
