Whatever was going on in the New York jazz and folk undergrounds during the 1960s, the ESP-Disk label was sure to document it. But aside from recording many American avant-garde artists like Albert Ayler, Frank Wright, and Patty Waters, ESP also gave a number of European free-jazz performers their earliest stateside exposure. In 1968, Karel Velebny (sax, bass clarinet, vibes) was a major figure in the jazz underground of Czechoslovakia, and SHQ was recorded in Germany that year with his quintet. While not quite as outside as many of his American counterparts of the day, SHQ is a nonetheless compelling set of free-bop. With its passages of swinging lyricism and rousing ensemble work, SHQ evokes early and mid-`60's Charles Mingus (albeit with freer solos).
