Re-released debut album from DIY aesthetes initially released on the legendary U.K. label, Rough Trade; includes popular club hit's "Sex" and "Sweetest Girl." U.K. import.
On its 1982 full-length debut, SONGS TO REMEMBER, Scritti Politti made a significant about-face from its late-'70s anarcho post-punk roots, offering up a set of bright pop tunes strongly informed by gospel, R&B, and reggae. (In many ways, this paralleled Paul Weller's move from the Jam to the Style Council.) Led by plaintive-voiced frontman Green Gartside (born Paul Julian Strohmeyer), the Welsh ensemble offers up forays into blue-eyed-soul (the smooth, sax-laden "A Slow Soul," the simmering "Faithless"), funk (the restless, bass-heavy "Sex"), and dub-tinged pop (the lilting club hit "The Sweetest Girl"), easing the curveball nature of the album slightly with the angular, quirky "Jacques Derrida." While Scritti Politti would find even more success and acclaim with their next record, CUPID & PSYCHE 85, SONGS TO REMEMBER is the fascinating document of an act in the midst of a huge sonic transition, and it stands out for exactly that reason.
