While Mr. Cheeks is not short on street cred, his raps are a million miles from the sociopathic tendencies of the gangsta world. The production on JOHN P. KELLY is full of funk and R&B grooves, not ominous, angular gangsta tracks. Sample-wise, Cheeks reaches back to Silver Convention's '70s disco hit "Fly Robin Fly" and Eddie Kendricks's "Keep on Truckin'," and the backbone of these tunes honors those sources. Lyrically, Cheeks is more interested in hanging with his friends and getting friendly with the ladies than engaging in crime or violence. Guest vocals from Stephen Marley (on the appropriately reggae-tinged "Mama Say") and Horace Brown (the R&B-laced "Friday Night") contribute to the album's crossover appeal, but there's not an ounce of compromise to be found in Mr. Cheeks's hip-hop vision.
