Although Merle Haggard's early hits are widely available on a number of anthologies, for years his original albums were out of print. This situation was rectified in the '90s with the re-release of a number of Haggard's early Capitol albums, among them his first album, STRANGERS. STRANGERS shows Haggard still experimenting with the sound that would define his early hits. A few of the tracks here feature the spare dobro-centered arrangements of his late '60s hits, but many others are heavily orchestrated (perhaps to mimic the "Nashville sound" that dominated the country charts at the time). Unlike his later albums, STRANGERS includes relatively few Haggard originals, none of them prison songs. Still, STRANGERS has plenty to recommend it, including a rare novelty song ("Sam Hill"), a fine Ernest Tubb cover ("Walking The Floor Over You") and several strong originals ("Hey Mr. DJ," "You Don't Have Far To Go"). In addition, STRANGERS offers a glimpse of one of country's greats at the very outset of his career, before he or the public had defined his public persona.
