Liner Note Author: Colin Escott. There is no shortage of compilations representing Johnny Cash's recordings for Sun Records, but HIS SUN YEARS, a beautifully complied, 60-track set, is undoubtedly among the best. Spread out over three discs, HIS SUN YEARS is a dazzling catalogue of Cash's offerings for that seminal rockabilly/country label, and includes some of his most essential tunes. "Folsom Prison Blues," "Cry Cry Cry," and "I Walk the Line" are here, of course, as are defining gems like "So Doggone Lonesome," the chugging "Get Rhythm," and the plaintive heartbreaker "Give My Love to Rose." A flurry of Hank Williams covers ("Hey Good Lookin'" and "I Can't Help It [If I'm Still in Love with You]" among them) underscores the Man in Black's deep country roots. Yet the sound on these recordings is characterized by the lean, stripped-down, rockabilly feel that was Sun's stock and trade. Cash's Sun legacy is a perennial, essential touchstone, and that legacy is represented to perfection here.
