This is free improvisation in its purest form, without melody, and in all likelihood without pre-conceived notions. To be sure, some listeners will recoil from the results, which appear at first blush to meander aimlessly, without center. But, those experienced (or enlightened) enough to appreciate the consistently high quality sounds will surely delight in the wondrous interaction among this trio of musical magicians. Each of violinist Edvind Kang, clarinetist Francois Houle, and drummer Dylan van der Schyff is well known and respected in this genre, and together they have little difficulty maintaining listener interest through alternating tempos, changing combinations of instruments, and revolving timbre. Although we have listed Kang as leader (and he is the first name on the cover), this is clearly a collective, leaderless effort. But leaderless does not imply rudderless, and this ship travels to many ports on its journey, picking up Oriental influences, canorous snippets, and even danceable rhythms, all without compromising the essentially radical nature of the music. For those familiar with the machinations of these three characters, the caliber of performance should come as no surprise. It is distinguished by its relaxed pace and the time it gives each participant to spread out and sing through his instrument. Patience is rewarded, and for those willing to forgo labels, and simply think of this as a loving encounter among three sympathetic and original stylists, there is a wealth of treasure to be found. ~ Steven Loewy
