チェコ音楽に特別な熱意を示していたマッケラスの生誕100周年を記念するアルバム。
アメリカのニューヨークに生まれたマッケラスは2歳の時に家族と共にオーストラリアへ移住しました。1946年に英国に渡り、その後プラハでカレル・アンチェルに指揮を学ぶ間にチェコ音楽の豊饒さに触れた彼は、イギリスに戻った後にチェコの音楽の熱心な紹介者となり、特にヤナーチェクのオペラの英国初演を次々と手がけた功績は特筆されます。ここに収録された《マクロプロス事件》はイギリス初演時の上演4日目のライヴ。オーストラリア出身のドラマティック・ソプラノ、マリー・コリアーをはじめ、声楽陣が張りのある声で熱演していることが伝わります。英語歌唱では響きやイントネーションがチェコ語と微妙に異なるのはやむをえませんが、ヤナーチェク作品の英国での普及、さらには西欧における普及においてマッケラスの果たした功績は大きく、それを振り返るにふさわしいリリースと言えるでしょう。余白には『消えた男の日記』の放送用スタジオ録音を収録。マッケラスは参加していませんが、二人の名歌手による解釈(こちらも英語歌唱)が聴けます。いずれもBBCの放送音源からの復刻。
