Like his Northern rival Puffy, Jermaine Dupri went from being an ambitious young hustler trying to make his way in the music biz to a well-respected hip-hop/pop producer with a label and performance aspirations of his own. On his third studio album, JD once again turns to the artist stable of his own label So So Def for a wealth of talent to kick in on the creative side. Just like Puffy, Dupri is flush with the success of the past few years fresh in his mind and makes a point of reminding everyone about this on "Ballin' Out Of Control," and the autobiographical play-by-play "Rock With Me" (with Jagged Edge). Other famous names cropping up are Bilal on the slow-rollin' funk of "Supafly," Ludacris pumping some attitude into the major league swagger of "Welcome To Atlanta" and former Xscape member Kandi on the jittery musical mash note "You Bring The Freak Out Of Me." Elsewhere, comedian Wanda Sykes uses a few choice four-letter words to put all gold-diggers on notice throughout the hilarious bit "The Dream" (Interlude"). With INSTRUCTIONS, Jermaine Dupri once again pulls together the ingredients of beat, rhymes, and talent into a satisfying hip-hop stew.
