Singer Songwriter, released in Europe by EMI's EMI Plus reissue imprint, consists of recordings licensed from Charly Records that were, in turn, obtained from Tomato Records in the U.S. The 16 tracks come from Townes Van Zandt's studio albums of 1968-1978: For the Sake of the Song, Our Mother the Mountain, Townes Van Zandt, Delta Momma Blues, High, Low and in Between, The Late Great Townes Van Zandt, and Flyin' Shoes. The 16 selections, running 56 minutes, constitute a best-of compilation, beginning and ending with Van Zandt's best-known compositions, "Pancho and Lefty" and "If I Needed You," which were country hits for others, and including many of the other songs that he played frequently in his shows, such as "Waiting Around to Die," "Tecumseh Valley," and "To Live Is to Fly." Since Van Zandt's death in 1997, many compilations and concert recordings of his work have been released. This one, which includes a lyric sheet and is offered for a modest price, is a good basic primer. ~ William Ruhlmann
