Personnel: Rob Hall (saxophone); Philipp Van Endert (guitar); Dave Frankel (piano, keyboards); Alex Keen (bass instrument); Paul Cavaciuti (drums). Rob Hall is a soprano saxophonist and clarinetist who takes the basic approach of Kenny G and turns up the jazz element a notch. The results are what might be expected: jazz lite, with lilting melodies and some lovely sounds. There are also plenty of stilted, empty and emotionally simple lines, which are not likely to appeal to those who enjoy stimulating jazz. The rhythm section is largely nondescript, and although solos are shared, there are very few memorable moments. The highlight of the album is probably the straight version of "Amazing Grace," and although it does not offer any special insights, it is beautifully played. Too many of the tunes reflect predictable harmonies and lines, and they often get stuck in the tedium of the moment. Still, Hall does have a good grasp of his horns and shows glimmers of potential. ~ Steve Loewy
