ベルリン・フィルとウィーン・フィルを中心とした有名オーケストラの金管打楽器奏者たちが集結、2023年にデビューした「フィルハーモニック・ブラス」のファースト・アルバムが、レーベルを変えてSACDハイブリッドで再登場します。プログラムは管弦楽のための有名な序曲集。弦も木管もいない編成への編曲はだいぶ不利な印象ですが、ピッコロ・トランペットが吹き鳴らす驚異的に安定した高音域と、名手たちがずっしりと支える低音域によって、本来は弦楽合奏が生む倍音によって広がる管弦楽の響きに遜色ない音を作り出しているうえ、各奏者の圧倒的な個人技も相まって、それぞれの作品の新たな魅力を発見するスリリングなパフォーマンスに仕上げています。管弦楽とオペラいずれにも精通したソヒエフの牽引力も見事。今回の再発売によりSACDの再生環境であれば、演奏の素晴らしさを最大限際立たせる高音質で楽しむことが出来ます。※日本語解説付

The listener who enjoys brass quintet music has many ensembles to choose from, and some have expanded a bit beyond the set of five. Much rarer is a recording like this one, on which The Philharmonic Brass makes its debut, on the major Decca label no less. The program, consisting of six substantial orchestral overtures (some overtures to other works, some freestanding), moves into full wind band territory and even beyond; the arrangements, by Peter J. Lawrence and the ensembles first-chair trumpeter Matthias Hofs, demand great agility from the players and call forth such a tremendous variety of textures that listeners are apt to forget theyre listening to a brass ensemble. There are upwards of 20 players, including four percussionists and a couple of guest brass performers, and most of them are given something highly distinctive to do. The presence of the rare Vienna horns, which have a timbre quite different from that of French horns, adds color, and the demands placed on the trumpeters are met quite spectacularly. The musicians are mostly members of the Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, so their talents are no surprise, but the arrangers and the work by conductor Tugan Sokhiev merit high praise as well.
