『Unclouded』は、メロディーズ・エコー・チャンバーが新たに踏み出す、人生を肯定するチャプターを描いた作品である。アルバムのタイトルは、日本のアニメーション作家・宮崎駿の、"悪の中に善を、善の中に悪を見るのだ"という言葉から引用されている。

「以前は大人になっていくことにノスタルジーを感じていたけれど、いまは"無常"という概念を理解できるようになったから、もうそれを個人的な問題として受け取ることはなくなった」とメロディーは語る。その明るい見通しは、逃避願望を描いてきたこれまでの作品とは対照的に、本作では"自然とともに今を生きる"という感覚として、軽やかなグルーヴと現実的な歌詞の両方に表れている。

『Unclouded』に参加した豪華な布陣の中心にいるのは、スウェーデンの名匠スヴェン・ヴンダーだ。ジョエル・ニルス・ダネルの名前でも知られる彼は、そのヴィジョナリーな音世界で高い評価を得ており、ラッパーのダニー・ブラウンらのプロデュースも手がけている。 (1/2)

ジョエルは共同プロデューサーとして参加し、作曲にも寄与、自身のユニークな音色を豊かなテクスチャーを持つキャンバスに注ぎ込んでいる。オープニング曲「The House That Doesn't Exist」では、弦楽が軽やかに舞い上がり、めまいを覚えるほどの高みに達し、やがて低音域で心地よく収束していく。その相乗的な共同作業は、この曲に象徴的に表れている。メロディーのエネルギーに満ちたヴァースに、アンサンブルが応答するかたちだ。

「ジョエルはインストゥルメンタル音楽を作るのに慣れていて、ヴォーカリストとコラボするのは今回が初めてだった」と彼女は語る。「彼の音楽は贅沢で、私の音楽はより生っぽい。その二つの世界のバランスを見つけることが、今回のプロセスの中で最も刺激的だった」
制作初期、プロシェの頭の中で鳴っていた弦楽のイメージは、マイ・ブラッディ・ヴァレンタインの歪んだ揺らめきから、ニコの不協和な弦楽アンサンブル、さらにはヘンリー・マンシーニの生命力と優雅さにまで及んでいた。

「たくさんの参照点があった」と彼女は認める。「でも、彼はそのすべてを実現してしまったと思う!」スウェーデン人ヴァイオリニスト/ヴィオラ奏者で、ジョエルの常連コラボレーターでもあるヨセフィン・ルンステーンは、すべての弦楽パートを演奏し、アヴァンギャルドなセンスを作品に吹き込んでいる。さらに、ジョエルと共にバンドで活動するギターのダニエル・エーゲンとベースのラヴ・オルサンも参加している。メロディーは彼らを「ビロードのグルーヴの達人」と称えている。また、先行シングルの「Daisy」は坂本慎太郎、クレイロ、ノラ・ジョーンズら参加のアルバムが話題のエル・ミシェルズ・アフェアーとの共作シングルとなっている。加えて、前2作でプロデュースを担ったライン・フィスクが本作でも参加し、ジョニー・マーを思わせる素晴らしいギターパートを全編に散りばめている。 (2/2)

When Melody Prochet went about assembling the team to make the fourth Melodys Echo Chamber album, she turned from one group of Swedish musicians to another. Dispensing with many of the crew who helped make both 2018s Bon Voyage and 2022 s Emotional Eternal incredibly successful mash-ups of dream pop and psychedelia, she collaborates here with producer Sven Wunder on 2025s Unclouded. Prochet and Wunder did retain the guitar wizardry of Dungens Reine Fiske, and he splatters tricky six-string magic across the album. Also on board are two members of Dina Ogon -- guitarist Daniel Ogen and bassist Love Orsen -- string arranger Josefin Runsteen, and drummer Malcolm Catto, known for his stellar playing with Heliocentrics, Madlib, and many more. This tight-knit group conjures up a sound that fits perfectly with Prochets enchanting vocals and sugar-smacked melodies. Cattos drumming is incredibly punchy and high in the mix, creating a concrete heavy, butterfly light foundation that plays off the shimmering string arrangements and Prochets reverb-cloaked singing. It makes for a sound that both tethered to the ground and floating high above in the clouds. The slithery bass work of Orsen provides another thrill; his teammate Ogen takes more of a backseat, but adds very sympathetic strums and jangles along the way. The overall sound is perhaps less exciting than previous albums, where one was never sure what the next song -- or even the next few minutes -- would bring. Here, there is a more cohesive, concentrated approach to the playing, arranging, and production. Thats in no way meant to say this record is any less of a delight; the small redefinition of sound here is a welcome development. Especially when paired with another batch of songs that gently probe the melancholy and magic of modern life. "In The Stars" is a radiant mid-tempo track that pairs a majestic string section and Prochets double-tracked vocal harmonies with Cattos loose fills and whomping backbeat, "Memorys Underground" switches from underwater girl group balladry to blown out psych rave-up before swirling into a symphonic climax, and "Eyes Closed" is a 70s cop show theme juxtaposed with weightless psych folk melodies and murky guitar freak outs. These are just a few examples of how this crew twist, meld, and reinvent the Melodys Echo Chamber sound; the effort pays off with a record that is just as impressively crafted as anything Prochet has done. That is high praise indeed, considering shes made some of the most inventive and pleasing neo-psychedelic adjacent albums of the previous decade or so. ~ Tim Sendra
