On STEAM, his fourth album, Ty Herndon shows off his impressive vocal range on a fine collection of commercially minded songs. Herndon brings heartfelt emotion to a country heartbreak song like "I Can't Do It All," growls his way through the sexy and salacious title track, and rocks out on the opening song, "Lookin' For the Good Life." Other standouts include the city girl/country boy love story, "New York Second" and the melodic "A Love Like That." But Herdon's versatility is most clearly underlined on the tracks "Pray for Me" and "You Can Leave Your Hat On." The former is a beautifully written, stone-country song about a man who experiences a spiritual reawakening. The latter is the bump 'n grind musical striptease made famous by Joe Cocker in the movie 9 + WEEKS. Herndon's been doing it live for years, and includes it here, as he notes, "by the fans' request." That Herndon can deliver convincing and believable performances on two such wildly diverse songs proves he's a talent who deserves a much higher profile.
