才能あるヴォーカリストによる素晴らしい楽曲が、いかに人を感動させ、惹きつけ、鼓舞することができるのかを力強く示す本作には、クラシック・ロック、インディー、アメリカーナに根ざした12曲の精緻な楽曲が収録されている。彼のキャッチーなメロディが、聴き手を引き込んでいく。一度聴くだけで、「自分自身を信じる」という彼のメッセージが深く、そして広く響いてくる。

A onetime Berklee College of Music attendee with near lifelong aspirations to make a life for himself in music, Tyler Ballgame (Tyler Perry) was paying his dues at open mikes and in cover bands back home in Rhode Island for several years after leaving school. His struggles with depression hit a new low with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, but with the encouragement of family and a "life-changing" counselor, he eventually acted on daydreams of starting over somewhere like Nashville, New York, or Los Angeles, and applied online for -- and quickly got -- an office job in L.A. There, he was able to build a following at regular open mikes with his own songs, and after about a year, he met Jonathan Rado (Foxygen, Miley Cyrus, Father John Misty) and Ryan Pollie (Los Angeles Police Department); they offered to work with him on an album. Most of the resulting debut was written in a month, and with Amy Aileen Wood (Fiona Apple, Sharon Van Etten) on drums and Wayne Whitaker on bass, Ballgames classic, 1960s- and 70s-influenced songs and soulful delivery were captured on vintage analog equipment by Rado and Pollie. Rough Trade signed on to release the album. These experiences provided the subject matter for most of For the First Time, Again, including an opening title track about the cyclical nature of love. Its opening acoustic guitar, tapped percussion, and what sounds like a crystal bowl accompany lyrics that are both longing and grateful, such as "Shook the hand of unbound desire" and "When it’s over and done, we tried." In the meantime, the songs arrangement expands to include additional guitar, the rhythm section, and subtle backing vocals. The star of the song, however, as with the rest of the album, is Ballgames voice, which at times is eerily reminiscent of Roy Orbison without seeming to imitate or overstay the suggestion. As the album unfolds, songs like the jaunty "I Believe in Love," the infectious, growling country-rocker "Matter of Taste," and the Elvis-vintage "Down So Bad" sound like lost AM radio hits. He and his collaborators also offer up affecting ballads with evocative titles like "Sing How I Feel" and "Deepest Blue" ("Every night/Sleep with my sorries"), a reverb-heavy piano song with touches of organ and buzzy electric guitar. By the time the 12-song set closes on the lively, horns-injected "Waiting So Long," its clear that Ballgames got the goods and the charisma, and that he found an ideal crew (or they found him) to put his music in its best incandescent light. ~ Marcy Donelson
