Washington, D.C.'s Shudder To Think has made a career out of confounding expectations. The band's early albums were released on the renowned D.C. punk label Dischord, and sported distinctly poppish songs in stark contrast to the rest of the label's crash-and-burn roster. Conversely, those who were attracted by the exuberant pop hooks and melodic know-how were often put off by Shudder To Think's angular, often abrasive guitar sound.
On 50,000 B.C., the band once again combines pop and punk in an original manner that has nothing whatsoever to do with Green Day and its legions of soundalikes. With Guitarist Craig Wedren's sweet tenor weaving its way through arch, art-punk guitar riffs, Shudder To Think sounds like nothing so much as Matthew Sweet fronting Fugazi. Several songs betray a Beatles/Buddy Holly influence and show that the band's roots extend far beyond the Buzzcocks and Wire, whose echoes can also be heard in the album's mix of punky power and poppy precision.
