Ty Herndon was born with what can only be called a Nashville voice: a full baritone, complete with a trademark, just-enough vibrato for the notes he decides to stretch out. Herndon has honed that vocal gift and evolved into a masterful country singer. His themes are basic--love, family and life in general--and he frames them in track after track of clean, well-produced, well-played modern country music. No frills, no gimmicks. The title song opens with a rock-steady beat, some wide-open guitar chords and then there it is, that voice. At once powerful and subtle, Herndon defines his musical territory, then explores the vocal possibilities without ever straying to far from the all-important melodic touchstone. At times he takes a gospel/blues turn, as on "Returning The Faith." But this disc is strongest when Herndon stays close to his roots, "Don't Tell Mama" for instance. Every note of that pedal steel says "pure country."
