Love dives into his second album with typical easy exuberance, setting his laid-back, lo-fi vocals over bluesy guitar, harmonica riffs and the funky, soulful groove of Special Sauce's standup double bass and trap drum. You don't have to listen too hard to pick up the wide range of American music paid tribute here (funk, soul, Delta blues, country, New Orleans R&B, hip-hop), approached in such a loose, gutsy way that it sounds just right. The band charges enthusiastically forward through songs about personal, time-worn subjects appealing in their simplicity (love, beer and basketball). Even on tracks with an obvious, strong influence, like "Leaving The City," which reeks of John Hammond, there is an originality to G. Love's particular blend of musical styles that doesn't allow it to be pinned down.
