Wait a minute, wasn't this kid supposed to be a country singer? Though he's seen by some as the Jimmy Osmond of Nashville, Billy Gilman displays a generous amount of R&B roots on DARE TO DREAM. Okay, so he's not exactly Otis Redding, but little Billy's pop-R&B flair on "Our First Kiss" and "She's My Girl" wouldn't sound out of place next to the likes of white-soul popsters Wham or Hall & Oates. On "You Don't You Won't" DARE TO DREAM takes yet another stylistic leap with a neo-swing tune that sounds like a young Michael Jackson (or at least Taylor Hanson) fronting Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. At this rate, the genre Gilman will wind up in by the time he becomes an adult is anybody's guess.
