By 1974, 71-year-old Bing Crosby was virtually retired from record-making, having last cut a full-length album, the Bing & Basie LP, in 1972. But he was lured out of this retirement by British record producer Ken Barnes, and agreed to record two albums' worth of material for the U.K. branch of United Artists Records. The result was a prolific spate of recording sessions (for UA and others) over the next couple of years. UA eventually issued a total of five LPs from sessions recorded between 1974 and 1976: That's What Life Is All About, A Couple of Song and Dance Men (a duet album with Fred Astaire), At My Time of Life, Beautiful Memories, and Come Share the Wine (a compilation). Only the first two were released in the U.S., both in 1976. In 1997, Barnes returned to the material and compiled a three-CD box set, The Complete United Artists Sessions, which contained all the recordings along with unreleased outtakes, studio chatter, and two songs cut by Crosby and Bob Hope for a UA single in 1958. The set included extensive liner notes explaining the circumstances surrounding the recordings. (Barnes had earlier written a book about his work with Crosby, The Crosby Years.) This Dutch album contains an exact copy of the contents of The Complete United Artists Sessions, but without any of the annotations. The first and third discs feature Crosby solo recordings, while the second is given over to the Astaire and Hope duets as well as two performances with Johnny Mercer and excerpts from a stage performance at the London Palladium featuring Crosby with his family, as well as a track by Rosemary Clooney. Crosby's voice is unsurprisingly weathered, but still strong, and in this combination of old favorites and specially written and selected newer material that philosophically reflects on his age, he provides a coda to his long career. ~ William Ruhlmann
