Founded by producer/composers Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff in the early 70's, Philadelphia International Records expanded on the strides in soul that Stax/Volt and Motown made in the previous decade. Starting out in the 60's as free-lance producers/songwriters, Gamble & Huff's talents showed early on in their work with the Soul Survivors ("Expressway To Your Heart"), Jerry Butler ("Only The Strong Survive"), Wilson Pickett ("Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You") and Dusty Springfield ("Silly, Silly Fool"). By 1972 Gamble & Huff had started their own label and were churning out hits by Billy Paul, Joe Simon, The O'Jays and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes.
Like Motown, Philly International employed an in-house band that included a full orchestra, horn section and arrangers. The resulting "Philly Sound" fused classical, jazz, blues & gospel elements into sophisticated soul dealing with social issues and adult themes. Topics like adultery ("Me And Mrs. Jones"), greed ("For The Love Of Money") and African-American consciousness ("Am I Black Enough For You") were tackled in a manner that brought the turmoil of the times to the dancefloor.
