After the strong comeback release MONSTER ON LEASH, Tower Of Power blew the doors off with their next release, T.O.P. This is clearly the strongest the band had been in many years, featuring top-flight songwriting, the driving rhythm team of Russ McKinnon and Rocco Prestia, and the strongest horn line since the group's heyday. Once again appearing is vocalist Tom Bowes, a stylishly fierce singer who epitomizes the passionate soul that has signified every TOP frontman. The results are a startlingly funky record that is guaranteed to energize longtime fans and newcomers alike.
The proceedings begin with the band's best single since "What Is Hip," the testifying "Soul With A Capital 'S'." This is followed quickly with the funky shuffle "It All Comes Back," forming a one-two punch that signifies that the funk is back to stay. Also famous for their moving ballads, slower cuts like the soothing "Please Come Back (To Stay)" and the passionate "Come To A Decision" are strong additions to the repertoire. Still, fiery funk numbers like "The Real Deal" and highlight "Come On With It" are the signature of TOP style and are presented here with a newfound '90s gusto.
