One of the best of Charlie Daniels' post-crossover success albums, 1989's SIMPLE MAN is classic Southern rock from a veteran in the field. From the opening statement of purpose, "What This World Needs is a Few More Rednecks," on, SIMPLE MAN is a cocky, almost belligerent collection.
The rave up "Saturday Night Down South" and the essential fiddle showcase "Play Me Some Fiddle" are hot rockers, while the title track, "Old Rock and Roller" and the sneering "Mister D.J." are as direct as anything Daniels has ever done. The celebratory "Oh Atlanta" and "Was it 26" are also gems, and the band, led by Daniels' longtime keyboardist Joel "Taz" DiGregorio, smokes throughout. This is as good as Southern rock gets.
