Since the age-induced demise of the first wave of Western swing legends, Texas' Asleep at the Wheel has been America's preeminent standard-bearer for this charming mixture of sophisticated urban jazz and hillbilly dance music. On 1987's 10, the 10th album of its career, Asleep at the Wheel shows that there's still plenty of life left in this classic country format. In fact, 10 found the band making serious commercial inroads, charting its first Top 20 single in over a decade. 10 actually includes two chart singles, Billy Joe Shaver's "Way Down Texas Way" (#39 on the country charts) and the standard "House of Blue Lights," which the band took to #17. The album also includes an oddball take on the Huey Lewis hit "I Want a New Drug," a fine cover of Guy Clark's "Blowin' Like a Bandit," and a nice update of the Delmore Brothers' classic "Blues, Stay Away From Me." Golfers will be disappointed (and the rest of us relieved) to learn that "String of Pars," the album's ninth track, is an instrumental.
