オリジナル盤のリリース(1975年9月12日)から半世紀を経て、ピンク・フロイドが、時代を定義づけたアルバム『炎～あなたがここにいてほしい(Wish You Were Here)』50周年記念盤。本作のBlu-rayには、音源として、ジェイムス・ガスリーによるアルバム初のドルビー・アトモス・ミックス、スタジオ・レア曲からなるボーナス・トラック、そして、未発表となる1975年4月26日のロサンゼルス・スポーツ・アリーナ公演での130分を超えるライヴ・パフォーマンスが収録される。当時まだ発売前だった『炎』『アニマルズ』に収録された曲の初期ヴァージョンや『狂気』全曲演奏を披露。有名ブートレッガーのマイク・ミラードによる録音をスティーヴン・ウィルソン(『ピンク・フロイド・アット・ポンペイ』をREMIX)によってきめ細かい修復とリマスタリングを施された、全16曲が初めて公式リリースとなる。ローリングストーン誌(2021年)ではこのライヴについてこう語られていた。「もしピンク・フロイドがブートレッグ・シリーズを作ることになったら、75年のLAスポーツ・アリーナのミラードのマスター・テープを手に入れるべきだ。ライヴ・アクトとして彼らの能力がピークに達している時のショーであり、可能な限り広く聴かれるべきものだ」。更に映像として、3つのコンサート・スクリーン・フィルムと、ストーム・ソーガソンの短編映画も収録される。

アルバム・リリースの発表を記念して、未発表だった「Welcome to the Machine」の初期デモ音源――当初の仮題は「The Machine Song」――も公開された。

原曲の壮大なスケールに比べるとコンパクトながら、「The Machine Song (Demo #2, Revisited)」は『炎～あなたがここにいてほしい(50周年記念盤)』に何が待っているのかを示す刺激的な序章となっている。さらに今回のリリースには、ロジャー・ウォーターズが最初にバンドへ持ち込んだホーム・デモ「The Machine Song (Roger's demo)」、デヴィッド・ギルモアのペダル・スティール・ギターを際立たせた「Wish You Were Here」の未発表インストゥルメンタル・ミックス、そしてルバムのA面とB面で2つに分かれていたヴァージョンが初めて全編ひとつに結合された「Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pts. 1-9)」が含まれる。この新たな完全版はジェームス・ガスリーによる最新ステレオ・ミックスで蘇り、バンドの創造的ヴィジョンを新たな角度から体験させてくれるだろう。(1/3)

『炎～あなたがここにいてほしい』は半世紀にわたり"史上最高のアルバム"リストに名を連ね続けてきたロック史の金字塔であり、全世界トータル・アルバム・セールス2000万枚以上、英米初登場1位を獲得。日本でもオリコン8位を記録し大ヒットした、日本では『狂気』に次いで人気のある作品。シド・バレットへの鎮魂歌「Shine On You Crazy Diamond」、催眠的な音響美「Welcome To The Machine」、そして "ところで、どっちがピンクなんだ?" という不朽の一節を刻んだ痛烈な風刺曲「Have a Cigar」(しかもそのヴォーカルを担ったのはウォーターズやギルモアではなく、バンド以外のアーティスト、ロイ・ハーパーであったことも伝説の一部となっている)、さらに、永遠のスタンダードへと昇華した表題曲「Wish You Were Here」を収録したピンク・フロイド通算9作目のアルバム『炎～あなたがここにいてほしい』は、ポピュラー音楽史の中で決定的瞬間を刻んだ名盤中の名盤であることは疑いようもない。

この作品の"不在"孤立"無常"、そして音楽ビジネスにおける不誠実さへの批評といった主題は、その象徴的なアルバム・アートワークに結実している。ストーム・トーガソンとオーブリー "ポー" パウエル率いるヒプノシスが生み出した視覚的ダブル・ミーニングは、見た瞬間に想像力が掻き立てられ、今日にいたるまでロックとアートを融合した見事なデザインとして語り継がれている。

ヒプノシスのオーブリー・"ポー"・パウエルはこの時代をこう振り返る。
「1970年代、アルバム・ジャケットは音楽そのものと同じくらい重要だった。ジャケットがレコードの売れ行きを左右していたんだ。レコード店には一度に1万種類ものスリーヴが並んでいて、だからこそ僕らの仕事は、群衆の中から抜きん出て目を引くものでなければならなかった。

僕はストーム(・トーガソン)に向かって"人間をどうやって火だるまにする?"と聞いたことを覚えている。当時はデジタル処理なんて存在しない。すると彼は"ポー、実際にやるしかないだろ"と答えた。それで決まったんだ。

忘れてはならないのは、当時EMIやキャピトルに所属するアーティストの中で、アルバム・カヴァーのクリエイティヴ面に完全な権利を持っていたのはビートルズとピンク・フロイドだけだったということだ。だからこそ僕らは自由にやりたいことができた。それは本当に素晴らしいことだった。当時のフロイドが革新的なバンドであったように、ヒプノシスもまた発明的であり続けようとした。僕らはあの抽象的で謎めいたイメージを守り抜こうと決意していたし、だからこそピンク・フロイドのためにそれを実現できたんだ。」(2/3)

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of the Moon with Wish You Were Here, a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barrett. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it's arguably even more impressive, showcasing the group's interplay and David Gilmour's solos in particular.
